Lassithi Plateau and the Diktaean Cave, Tzermiado
Eight hundred metres up in the Dikti mountains, Crete hides a plain in the sky: the Lassithi Plateau, a bowl of patchwork fields ringed by peaks, entered through the Seli Ambelou pass where a row of white windmills once pumped water for a thousand small farms. The plateau's villages ring the fields, and above Psychro opens the Diktaean Cave, where myth says Rhea hid the infant Zeus from his father Cronos. Crete's thirty-three scenes in this gallery are all coastal or palatial; this is the island's inland heart, its agricultural and mythic high country.
