Simos Beach, Elafonisos
At the southern tip of the Peloponnese, the little island of Elafonisos holds what is regularly voted one of Europe's finest beaches: Simos, where a ribbon of pale sand joins two bays — Megalos Simos and Mikros Simos — in water that shades from champagne shallows to deep turquoise. Behind the sand lie dunes, junipers and cedars of Lebanon, and nothing else: no resort, no marina, just a couple of beach bars and the light. The island, a fishing village with a ferry from the mainland shore at Pounta, is the south-east cape's hideaway.
