Anavatos, Chios
Anavatos, 'the inaccessible', is Chios' ghost: a medieval village built like an eagle's nest on a conical rock in the island's empty centre, founded for defence and emptied by history — shaken by the 1881 earthquake, abandoned by its last families within living memory. Its stone houses stand roofless in tiers up the rock, one church kept restored among them, and the silence is total. Chios is in this gallery for its castle, its monastery and its mastic villages; Anavatos is the island's hideaway, the place its own people speak of in a lower voice.
